Marking seven days since the passing of Pope Francis, a mass will be held in his honor at the Lima-based Government Palace on Sunday, President Dina Boluarte announced.

The announcement was made on Wednesday evening after signing the law that includes persons with disabilities in the Amber Alert system.

"Upon learning of the Holy Father's passing, I recalled some kind words he shared for the Peruvian people during the time I met with him in Rome. We wanted to take part in his funeral rites to convey the Peruvian people's farewell affection," Mrs. Boluarte stated.

The Head of State noted that "this Sunday, marking seven days since his passing, a mass will be held at the Government Palace in honor and tribute to our Holy Father Francis."

Regarding the law that includes persons with disabilities in the Amber Alert system, she explained that the reform promotes the immediate search for individuals with physical, mental, intellectual, or sensory disabilities, fostering inclusion and safety.

"This is a concrete response for thousands of Peruvian men and women who, for years, were overlooked by the (Peruvian) State. The law reaffirms our commitment to governing with an inclusive approach, social responsibility, and a vision for a country for all. No one should be left behind," she emphasized.

The top official added that the Amber Alert has been a key tool in addressing the disappearances of children and women who are victims of violence.

However, along the way, a critical gap became evident: the system did not consider persons with disabilities.

This omission ultimately left even more vulnerable those who already face multiple barriers, which this law now addresses, she said.

"The law stipulates that all reports of disappearances must be received and processed at any police station nationwide," Mrs. Boluarte stated.

"Since a society that does not listen to its most vulnerable citizens is a society that renounces its own humanity. In our Government, we will not allow indifference or bureaucracy to continue silencing their rights," she added.

Moreover, the President urged the Judiciary, Congress, and the Peruvian National Police to ensure the enforcement of the Amber Alert Law.

She also highlighted that in 2024 assistance was provided to over 4,000 individuals with disabilities who were victims of violence in their environment.
